"A Mystery in the Depths" is a Main Quest in Tears of the Kingdom.[1]

Overview

"A Mystery in the Depths" becomes available after one of the Main Quests associated with "Regional Phenomena" has been completed. At Lookout Landing, Link will find Josha while Tauro arguing about whether he should be involved in Chasm Research.[2][3] Tauro wants to help Josha, but she thinks that he should finish investigating the Ring Ruins first.[4] When the two of them notice Link nearby, Tauro decides to give up and return to Kakariko Village.[5] Josha explains that although she admires Tauro, she is afraid he would abandon her Chasm Research if something more interesting came along, and she thinks Link would fit her needs perfectly.[6] If Link agrees to help her, Josha will thank him and invite him into her lab.[7][note 1] Following this, "A Mystery in the Depths" will start.

When Link speaks to Josha, she reveals that the Zonai Survey Team found more Slates that she was able to piece together into a complete mural.[9] She observes that the Statues That Point the Way appear to be leading to an unknown structure associated with the Zonai.[10] By following it, Josha thinks one could find something associated with the Ancient Powers of the Zonai.[11] Since Josha is too young to go into the Depths, she asks Link to investigate the structure on her behalf, and she gives him 10 Giant Brightbloom Seeds and a bundle of 10 Arrows to help him.[12][13][14] She believes that investigating for her could provide Link with both clues to Zelda's location and a new Ancient Power.[15][note 2][note 3]

Link receiving Autobuild

By following the Statues That Point the Way in the Depths, Link will eventually come upon the Great Abandoned Central Mine. There, he will find two Researchers investigating an inactive Steward Construct, which they have been unable to figure out.[17] Using his Right Arm, Link is able to restore the Steward Construct, which also activates the Mine's Travel Point.[18] The Steward Construct then grants Link the ability to Autobuild.[19]

The Researchers are shocked that Link was able to receive the Ancient Power.[20] They ask for a demonstration, and after consulting a text that describes Autobuild, they request that Link repair their broken vehicles.[21] First, Link must reattach the Small Wheel to the vehicle on the Round Pedestal. When he does so, he will be able to use Autobuild to recreate the vehicle from the pieces left on the Square Pedestal.[22] After both vehicles have been repaired, the Researchers will be shocked express their satisfaction.[23]

Master Kohga's introduction

Suddenly, the Researchers call for their master before teleporting away, revealing that they were Yiga Footsoldiers.[24] A voice can then be heard, noting that the rumors about an Ancient Power appear to be true.[25] From behind Link, Master Kohga appears alongside the Yiga Footsoldiers, and he commends both Link and his subordinates for confirming the rumor.[26] After looking at Link, however, Master Kohga recognizes him from their encounter at the Yiga Clan Hideout, which resulted in him entering the Depths and swearing vengeance on Link.[27] With a dance, he reintroduces himself to Link as the leader of the Yiga Clan.[28] He accuses Link of cheating, claiming that it is not fair that he can Autobuild while they have to build their vehicles by hand.[29] Since they were planning to offer the ability to the Magnificent One, Master Kohga declares that he will take it back.[30] He teleports into the nearby courtyard and summons a massive vehicle, where he challenges Link to a fight.[31]

After Link defeats Master Kohga, he complains about his strength.[32] He decides to leave Link alone for now, gloating that he has already found many other Abandoned Mines in the Depths.[33] Having seen Link use his Right Arm to receive Autobuild, he plans to try and get it from a Steward Construct at another Mine, which he will use to destroy the world with the Magnificent One.[34] Master Kohga summons a Wing with four Fans and a Steering Stick attached, using it to retreat.[35] A stone Treasure Chest containing a Huge Crystallized Charge then appears in front of Link, and the "Master Kohga of the Yiga Clan" Side Adventure will begin.

When Link returns to Josha at Lookout Landing, she notices that he appears pleased and asks what happened.[36] Upon hearing about Autobuild, she is shocked, and she decides to search for anything relevant to it among her artifacts.[37] She is able to find a Schema Stone, which grants Link the Schematic for a Hot-Air Balloon.[38][39] She suggests that he test it out by repairing Robbie's broken Hot-Air Balloon.[40] After she removes the chains holding down the Balloon and the Basket, she asks Link to demonstrate Autobuild for her.[41]

Using Autobuild, Link is able to reassemble Robbie's Hot-Air Balloon, much to Josha's surprise.[42] She shouts to Robbie to get his attention, and he is shocked to see his Hot-Air Balloon has been fixed.[43] Josha is happy to have been able to see the Ancient Power of the Zonai, giving Link a piece of Large Zonaite as a reward.[44] Although she does not know its uses, she believes Link could make use of it, since he is able to use Ancient Powers.[45] Josha has been inspired to continue her Chasm Research, and she hopes that Link will tell her anything else he discovers about the Depths.[46] Following this conversation, "A Mystery in the Depths" will be completed.

Objectives

Stage Description
1 Josha is looking for help investigating the Depths due to a new discovery. She said you've come at a perfect time and has selected you to help her.

Go with Josha to hear more about the upcoming investigation.
2 Josha pieced together a large mural from fragments to complete a picture that might show a series of statues in the Depths.

Each one looks toward the next, until the last gazes at a temple-like building that's the focal point of the mural. Josha thinks this place may be real and hold a special Zonai power.
3 Just as Josha thought, when you went where each statue was looking in the Depths, you found your way to a temple-like building. There you acquired the Zonai ability Autobuild.

Report your discovery to Josha at Lookout Landing.
4 When you shared Autobuild with Josha, she expressed that she wants to see the power in action.

She asked you to use Autobuild to repair the broken balloon at Lookout Landing.
Complete With the help of Autobuild, you fixed the broken balloon. Both Josha and Robbie were impressed. The results of this investigation reaffirmed the importance of the Depths to Josha. She has asked you to let her know if you make any new discoveries in the Depths.

"C'mon, don't say that! You've got to let me cast my line into the Depths too. I'm capable of deciphering some Zonai script—who else can tackle that stuff?" — Tauro (Tears of the Kingdom)
"I mean, your skills would be super helpful to me... You're in charge of the Zonai Survey Team, after all. But aren't you heading up the Ring Ruins investigating in Kakariko Village anyway, Tauro? That's where your focus should be. Those fallen ruins are huge and exciting! Big enough to see from Lookout Landing! So, please, finish your work there before asking to join in new research." — Josha (Tears of the Kingdom)
"But! But to read firsthand Zonai history... That bait's too juicy to pass up!" — Tauro (Tears of the Kingdom)
  5. "Ah, Swordsman!" — Josha (Tears of the Kingdom)
"Uh, someone else is here for the job? Already? I guess it's a lost cause. Everyone seems kind of busy. I'll head back to Kakariko Village and...just stare up at those Ring Ruins. May as well head out before I get in anyone's way." — Tauro (Tears of the Kingdom)
  6. "Tauro is an amazing person. And he's a first-rate archaeologist too! But he loves Zonai research so much that he'll bolt from a project to chase any new discoveries. I've been looking for someone to help with my investigation of the Depths. I mean, you'd be best for the job..." — Josha (Tears of the Kingdom)
  7. "[I'll help.] Thank you! Having you help out is such a relief. We'll explain all the details to you. Come with me!" — Josha (Tears of the Kingdom)
  8. "I'm sure everyone will feel better knowing you're on the case. Y'know... I'm curious about what I heard about Hyrule Castle too. Doc is chasing that, so I think it'll be OK. Besides, my discovery might hold a clue about finding Princess Zelda. Well, I'll explain everything to you. This way!" — Josha (Tears of the Kingdom)
  9. "So, remember that fragment I had? The one that showed a single, mysterious figure? I found more fragments among the things our survey team brought back from the Depths. And guess what? They fit together like puzzle pieces! Ta-da! Just look!" — Josha (Tears of the Kingdom)
  10. "Feast your eyes upon this amazing mural! This scene shows that there's a whole series of statues down there, like the one you found for me last time. But what really caught my attention is the way they're oriented. Each figure is pointed toward the next one in the series. Until it ends with that last statue facing a final destination—a building that looks like a temple! Also, see those large ears on the figure at the front of the building? That's got to be one of the Zonai. And then there's that strange hand symbol that seems to be responding to whatever the Zonai is doing." — Josha (Tears of the Kingdom)
  11. "So to collect my thoughts on all this... I'm pretty sure if you follow the gaze of each of those statues down there, you'll reach that structure. I'm also betting that the temple-like building holds something of Zonai origin. I've heard that the Zonai wielded mysterious powers... I wonder if this correlates to those powers." — Josha (Tears of the Kingdom)
  12. "Of course, this is still just speculation on my part. Sooo... That's where you come in, Swordsman! I want you to find the temple structure depicted in the mural. Initially I figured I could just go myself, so I gathered a bunch of brightblooms and supplies. But they pulled the "kid card" on me and said I couldn't go into the Depths. So...here." — Josha (Tears of the Kingdom)
  13. "You can have these too." — Josha (Tears of the Kingdom)
  14. "Brightblooms and arrows are perfect for exploring the Depths!" — Josha (Tears of the Kingdom)
  15. "There's the added bonus that checking out the Depths might provide us with clues to help find Princess Zelda. So if it all works out, maybe you'll snag some mysterious power for yourself AND gain clues about Princess Zelda! Nothing but good things, right? Thanks for your help with this, Swordsman!" — Josha (Tears of the Kingdom)
  16. "I heard something about a potential sighting of Princess Zelda at the castle... But I need to stay focused on my research into the Depths. That's where I'm sure we'll find a real clue about what's happened to the princess!" — Josha (Tears of the Kingdom)
  17. "Ah! I didn't think we'd see anybody else down here! Though I imagine you could say the same to us, huh? Uhhh... You're here to investigate too, right? Y'know, since you took the Yi— Er, I mean, the survey-team interview? Because we definitely took that interview too. That's why we're here. Yep... Oh, uh, take a look at this! Our latest discovery nearly knocked us off our feet. We found this weird device with these wavering green letters on it, and this strange statue! We think it's one of those living stone constructs. Pretty sure it's supposed to move too. Well, I say that...but it's all just conjecture on my part. Truth is, we're in a bit of a pnic here. If we don't figure out how this thing works soon, we're going to be in big trouble." — Researcher (Tears of the Kingdom)
  18. "Authorizer verified." — Steward Construct (Tears of the Kingdom)
"It— It's moving!" — Researcher (Tears of the Kingdom)
  19. "Conferring Autobuild to authorizer now. Please utilize it as you explore and excavate the Depths for zonaite." — Steward Construct (Tears of the Kingdom)
  20. "Did I...see what I thought I saw? Did that thing just...give you the power we've been researching?" — Researcher (Tears of the Kingdom)
  21. "That's incredible! C-could you give us a demonstration? Let me see what the text has to say. Hold on, um... "This ability will allow you to commit any structure you create to memory. "Any object committed to memory can be instantly reproduced."" — Researcher (Tears of the Kingdom)
"I know just what to use it on! As luck would have it, both of our vehicles just broke, and we've been struggling to put them back together again. The one on the round pedestal lost a wheel... And the one on the square pedestal has fallen to pieces. But I think, if you put the wheel back onto the first one... You should be able to use your power to repair the second in no time flat! So come on, let's see it in action! Fix 'em up quick! You can start by repairing the one on the round pedestal." — Researcher (Tears of the Kingdom)
  22. "Wow, look at that! That wheel's right back on there, snug as a bug! Now it's time for the main event...the one in pieces on the square pedestal! Use that new power of yours, and fix it up lickety-split." — Researcher (Tears of the Kingdom)
  23. "Whoa. It's like I'm seeing double! Built in less than no time flat too. This is exactly what I was hoping for. Thank you, ancient power!" — Researcher (Tears of the Kingdom)
"The texts were right, after all!" — Researcher (Tears of the Kingdom)
  24. "I'll say. That power's incredible. Oh, Maaaster!" — Researcher (Tears of the Kingdom)
  25. "Well, look at that... The legends were true!" — Master Kohga (Tears of the Kingdom)
  26. "Great work, both of you! You too, stranger. Credit where credit is due. Yes, credit where credit is..." — Master Kohga (Tears of the Kingdom)
  27. "If there's one foe I'll never forget, it's the man who cast me from my Gerudo Desert hideout into these very Depths. It was you! Now I live for vengeance. Both upon that no-good Zelda, and upon my sworn enemy! That means you, Link! We meet again at last!" — Master Kohga (Tears of the Kingdom)
  28. "And don't try to tell me you've forgotten me—we are bound by fate, you and I! Hear my name and tremble in fear! I am the leader...of the Yiga Clan! The strong! The Depths-defying! From the ashes, rising! MASTER KOHGA!" — Master Kohga (Tears of the Kingdom)
  29. "I saw it all. I saw the moment you obtained the ancient power we've sought for so long! The highlight of all the musty old texts we've found in this land! It remembers objects you've assembled and can instantly reproduce them... A long-lost ability from the distant past! So you... You— You're cheating! Here we are, working ourselves to the bone to build things by hand... And you can just whip them up in an instant! THAT'S NOT FAIR!" — Master Kohga (Tears of the Kingdom)
  30. "You know who could've used that power? The one we worship and revere—the Magnificent One! If we offered it to him, he would have crushed you and Zelda both... But you just walked right up and snatched it away! Now I'm gonna snatch it back!" — Master Kohga (Tears of the Kingdom)
  31. "Prepare yourself!" — Master Kohga (Tears of the Kingdom)
  32. "Urgh! You pesky little...PEST! Why won't you stand still and let me squish you?" — Master Kohga (Tears of the Kingdom)
  33. "Well, fine! I suppose I can let you off easy for today. You think you're so smart... But I've already found a whole bunch of ruins down here!" — Master Kohga (Tears of the Kingdom)
  34. "I saw your little trick there. You used your right hand to get that construct going. I'll grab that power you cheated me out of for MYSELF, off at the Southwestern Abandoned Mine! Then the Magnificent One and I will guide this world to its miserable end. And there's nothing you can do to stop us!" — Master Kohga (Tears of the Kingdom)
  35. "So don't follow me!" — Master Kohga (Tears of the Kingdom)
  36. "Swordsman, what is it? You look very pleased with yourself... C-could it be?!" — Josha (Tears of the Kingdom)
  37. "A-U-T-O-build! With the ability to INSTANTLY replicate things you've built?! AND schema stones?! So there really was a Zonai temple housing a mysterious power down in the Depths. Hm... That may also mean...that some of the things collected from the Depths may give us other clues... Wait here just a sec!" — Josha (Tears of the Kingdom)
  38. "Hmmm. Not that. Nope, not that either. AHA! Here we go!" — Josha (Tears of the Kingdom)
  39. "Here, Swordsman!" — Josha (Tears of the Kingdom)
  40. "This is a schema stone for a balloon, right? So if you use this with Autobuild, you could replicate a balloon. Right? I'm thinking... That balloon over there belongs to Goggles, but it's broken right now. Do you think you might be able to fix it with Autobuild? Eep! So exciting! I want to see it in action pronto. I'll go prepare really quick!" — Josha (Tears of the Kingdom)
  41. "Swordsman! Everything's ready! Please demonstrate how Autobuild replicates things!" — Josha (Tears of the Kingdom)
  42. "I...I... I can't believe it! You rebuilt the balloon in an instant!" — Josha (Tears of the Kingdom)
  43. "Gog...gles... GOGGLES!" — Josha (Tears of the Kingdom)
"What are you yelling about, Josha? ... Inconceivable! My balloon! It's fixed!" — Robbie (Tears of the Kingdom)
  44. "This must be the mysterious power the Zonai had... I never thought I'd see such a marvel with my very own eyes. Thank you for making this a reality. Please, take this. I've been saving it for a special occasion." — Josha (Tears of the Kingdom)
  45. "I still haven't been able to figure out what that is. But judging from that light, it's gotta be Zonai in origin! Since you can use Zonai powers, I think it would be better for you to have it." — Josha (Tears of the Kingdom)
  46. "There was an incredible power lying hidden in the Depths after all... I think I'll keep researching the Depths going forward. Who knows? I just might find a clue about Princess Zelda. If you make any new discoveries in the Depths, please let me know, Swordsman!" — Josha (Tears of the Kingdom)
