Temple of Light

The Temple of Light became the resting place of the Triforce during the Era of Chaos.[1][2] It is the only known elemental temple that is not located directly within Hyrule. Instead, it lies in the center of the Sacred Realm.[3] It can be accessed only through the chamber of the Master Sword inside the Temple of Time. By withdrawing the Master Sword from the Pedestal of Time, a portal opens to the Sacred Realm, which leads to the Temple of Light.[4]

Features and Overview

Ocarina of Time

Main article: Chamber of Sages

Unlike the other temples in Ocarina of Time, the Temple of Light is not a fully explorable dungeon, and the Chamber of Sages is the only room visited. When Link pulls the Master Sword from the Pedastal of Time, he unkowingly allows Ganondorf to enter the Sacred Realm and steal the Triforce from the Temple of Light. Because Link is too young to wield the Master Sword, he is sealed within the Temple for seven years, and awakens in the Chamber of Sages to meet Rauru, the Sage of Light. After giving Link the Light Medallion, Rauru tasks Link with awakening the other Sages, who eventually join Rauru within the Chamber of Sages. They eventually draw Ganondorf into the Sacred Realm from the Chamber and seal him within after he is defeated by Link.

A Link Between Worlds

Main article: Chamber of Sages

Link visits the Chamber of Sages after rescuing each of the seven Sages from the Paintings that Yuga used to trap them. Once all seven Sages are present, they reveal the Triforce of Courage to Link and create a staircase inside the chamber so that he can reach it. The Sages remain in the Chamber of Sages until the Triforce is returned to Hyrule.

The platforms the Sages stand upon spell "courage" in Hylian.

Trivia

A Beta dungeon long mistaken to be a cut Light Temple or "Sky Temple." In reality, it is a test recreation of what appears to be Level 1, and the "sky" is actually water[5]
  • Assuming the Chamber of Sages in A Link Between Worlds is the same one seen in Ocarina of Time, this marks the only confirmed time Link can ever explore the Temple of Light in any capacity, albeit in a very limited manner when climbing the magical staircase to receive the Triforce of Courage.
  • The Temple of Time dungeon in Twilight Princess is said to be adorned with the symbol of the Temple of Light, which is also found on the Light Medallion.[6] Whether this implies the Temple of Time dungeon as seen in Twilight Princess is the Temple of Light is unknown (see below).
  • It was long assumed a playable Light Temple was cut from Ocarina of Time and instead recycled into the Spirit Temple. Supporting this myth were images of the Triforce within a Temple that appeared to be in the sky, similar to depictions of the Sacred Realm. However, within data recovered from a Spaceworld '97 Beta cartridge, Rauru makes no mention of a "Temple of Light." Some text refers to the Temple of Time as the "Hylia Cathedral" instead, which would have required the Prelude of Light to enter.[7][8] This implies the Cathedral thematically served as the "Light Temple" of the game, and the notion of the Chamber of Sages being the Temple of Light was added late in development. There is scarce evidence the Cathedral was ever intended to be a fully implemented dungeon before Twilight Princess.[9]
  • The Pyramid of Power is a similar structure in the center of the Dark World that houses the Triforce. However, no official connection is ever made between the Temple of Light and the Pyramid.
